Senior Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails) (f/m/d) • Valora Digital

Valora Digital is the tech unit of Valora. We are a team of developers and product managers that tackle projects that delight customers, improve processes and keep the company ready for the future of retail. We develop modern, web-based E-commerce solutions such as customer-facing self-checkout devices, backoffice tools for monitoring and management of those devices, employee-facing applications to facilitate their hard foodvenience work in kitchens, and mobile apps to accelerate our internal processes at Valora. Many of our projects are in production use today and we own our code and our infrastructure end-to-end.

Who we are looking for
We are seeking an experienced engineer that knows Ruby on Rails inside out and that can help us scale up our Ruby projects such as “Limited”. You know how to get up to speed with Rails codebases efficiently and we’re counting on you to proactively interface with business to make sure we’re continuously solving the right problems.

Key tasks and responsibilities

• Help shape the future of our shopping experience
• Write clean, efficient, and reusable code and conduct code reviews
• Troubleshoot and debug issues reported by customers and internal stakeholders
• Document technical specifications, processes, and guidelines
• Design and implement visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes and workflows

Key skills / requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in software development
• You like to use your expertise to sketch and implement tasks end-to-end, from the user-facing frontend all the way to defining the PostgreSQL database model
• You take ownership of the things you work on and you’re able to operate autonomously, but without isolating yourself from the rest of the team
• CI/CD is second nature to you and you think deployments should be frequent, fast, painless, zero-downtime, and easy to roll back
• The technical skills we’re looking for in this position include include Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Heroku, and GCP + Azure. There's more if you dig deeper - some of our other projects are powered by F# (.NET), Typescript + React, Swift, Terraform, and even Nix flakes.
• You're familiar with modern cloud environments
• You're no stranger to using AI tools where it makes sense to you
• We stick to English in our codebases, in our written documentation, and in our communication. You'll have a better time if you additionally have decent German language skills as we often interface with other teams and stakeholders in German.
